Sarlat-la-Canéda is a medieval town in the Périgord Noir area of the Dordogne, best known for its beautifully preserved historic centre, markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and traditional Périgord cuisine featuring foie gras, truffles and walnuts. Much of the old town is pedestrianised. You can see the main sights in half a day, although allowing a full day gives you time to enjoy the market and stop for lunch.
The best way to discover Sarlat is on foot. Its narrow lanes are lined with honey-coloured stone buildings, and around almost every corner you’ll find a little square, a staircase or an old gateway. This guide covers the main sights, things to do, the best time to visit and places you can combine with a trip to Sarlat.
